Diversity and Inclusion at Prescott College

Diversity at Prescott College is a way of thinking and a way of being. We welcome students, faculty, and staff who believe in recognizing and respecting our lived experiences and self-identity as they relate to the human and biodiversity of our planet.

Our Curricular Approach
We embed the tenets of knowing self, knowing others, and immersion of self and others as a means of transformation into a scholar and global citizen. We challenge traditional canons of knowledge and empower our students through an experiential educational approach that involves critical pedagogy to rethink, reconsider, and reducate traditional history and education to reclaim true understanding of the human family and the diverse bioregions that we inhabit. 

Our students
Students are our greatest asset as a College. Students bring personal and intellectual inquiry that is embraced and cultivated throughout our curriculum, student led clubs, and special initiatives. Prescott College students made national news when they voted to add a voluntary $30 fee to their tuition to support the Freedom Education Fund. The fund provides a full tuition scholarship to one undocumented student every year. It was part of Miriel Manning’s senior project. Miriel was inspired by migrant-led organizing in Southern Arizona. She was awarded the Tom Pettit Social Justice Award. Kado Stewart developed Camp OUTdoors for LGBTQ youth, featured in the ground breaking National Geographic documentary, Gender Revolution, hosted by Katie Couric. Brittini Ward and the Black Student Union organized the institution’s first Black Arts Festival by bridging the campus community to the local community to celebrate Black artists. Ashley Ortiz centered her senior project on the global Take Back The Night initiative by capturing photographic images of victims and allies of those who have experienced sexual, relationship or domestic assault, harassment, or violence, transforming the entire campus into a sacred space. 

 

Our faculty
Our curriculum is inspired and directed by faculty who are published scholars and researchers, community and environmental activists, policy makers and world leaders. Faculty embed diversity and inclusion in their pedagogy and model critical inquiry and holistic understanding of the issues facing our local and global communities and ecosystems. Cecil Goodman, Director of Orientation and Adjunct Faculty of the Adventure Education program infuses inclusion and equity in our On Campus new student orientation. Dr. Mary Poole, brings students to East Africa to dispel myths about the people and ecosystems of the Massailand at our Dopoi Center for Education and Research. Dr. Centáe Richards challenges aspiring teachers and educational leaders to consider the implicit bias we bring into K-12 classrooms. 
 

Our Community
Founded in the midst of the 1960s, Prescott College is rooted in the spirit of social change to create a more just world. This spirit is in our DNA. In the fall 2017, we introduced the Changemaker Scholarship, an initiative that guarantees a tuition scholarship to every new accepted student who applies by our priority application deadline that intends to enroll in a degree program during the fall or spring semester. #IAmPrescottCollege was a community based initiative to demonstrate our support of gender self identification as part of the national #WontBeErased initiative. Members of our board, our president, provost, faculty, staff, and students offered their words of commitment.
