Prescott College Announces Preferred Teach-Out Partnership With Green Mountain College

January 24, 2019 - By Prescott College

Today the Board of Trustees of Green Mountain College (GMC), a 185-year-old institution recognized for its dedication to progressive education and environmental sustainability, voted to close its doors after the end of the spring semester. At the same time, GMC officials announced a preferred teach-out partnership with Prescott College to help Green Mountain students to complete their degree programs. Prescott College will admit GMC students, create opportunities for GMC students to continue working with their faculty, and create a Green Mountain Center at Prescott College to maintain Green Mountain’s name and legacy.

“This is a sad day for everyone associated with Green Mountain College,” said Prescott College President John Flicker. “Our institutions share a common mission, culture, and values. Our primary goal is to help GMC students complete their studies and achieve the educational goals that brought them to GMC.”

The two institutions were founding members of the EcoLeague, a consortium of environmentally focused liberal arts colleges, and the two colleges share a number of pedagogical and philosophical approaches to higher education. GMC administrators and Board of Trustees have approved Prescott College as the preferred partner in the teach-out plan of the GMC programs.

Prescott College Provost Dr. Paul Burkhardt said of the partnership: “We will carry on the GMC legacy, not just by helping students to complete their degrees, but by welcoming both students and faculty from GMC to join our learning community. Given the flexible design of our programs, all GMC students will find an existing Prescott College program where they can complete their current program of study with a remarkable alignment of curricular content and title. But we will also create opportunities for Green Mountain students to continue to learn directly from Green Mountain faculty.”

Prescott College has created an online portal at www.prescott.edu/GMC providing details for current GMC students and future applicants to indicate their interest to transfer and enroll.

Representatives from Prescott College will be on the GMC campus January 30 and February 6 to meet with students and faculty to discuss transfer options. Prescott College will provide 100% transfer of all credits from GMC, guarantee admission with no application fees, and guarantee matching net tuition price or better for each student.
