Thirty-two students and their instructors visited Prescott College and the town of Prescott on April 13 as part of extended educational tour of the Southwest. Students enrolled in Folkehøgskulen (Folk High School), located in the Norwegian town of Sogn, participate in gap year programs designed for students between high school and college to experience other cultures. Such programs are common in Norway’s education system. During their tour of the area, students hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, rafted the San Juan River, and explored the canyon country and national parks of southeastern Utah.

Over the past ten years, students from Folkehøgskulen have included a visit to the Prescott College campus during their tour of the Southwest. For many years Doug Hulmes, Professor of Environmental Studies, has taken students from Prescott College to visit Folkehøgskulen during his course, “Explorations of Norway Nature and Culture.” The two schools have developed a collaborative relationship to benefit their respective students.
