To kick off Sex Week here at Prescott College, the week opened with the “Yoni Dialogues” and gallery show, inspired by the 1994 play, The Vagina Monologues, written by Eve Ensler. Due to the amount of self-composed monologues and feel of the group, the women featured in this performance decided to change the name to “Yoni Dialogues” as it was more fitting to this staging. Yoni, a sanskrit word for vulva, can also be translated as “sacred space,”or “source of all life.”

Everyone was allowed to participate by reading a monologue from The Vagina Monologues or a self written piece; as well as submitting an art piece. The performance delves into consensual and non-consensual sexual experiences, body image, genital mutilation and several other topics through the eyes of women of various ages, races, sexualities, and other differences. This performance was meant to bring a voice to the stories of women and their lived experiences. Vagina Monologues is to be taken as a conversation starter for the next week of discussing sex education, an opener to learning the many different experiences one can have with their bodies.

This is a place for everyone to address women’s sexuality and the stigma surrounding rape and abuse. A performer, Talia Molesworth stated: “I want to be able to talk about it [sex] with people all the time and not have to feel insecure about things, or our bodies, or what we do with our bodies.“  To remove the degradation that comes with the word “vagina” and to celebrate not only the word but women as well.

All proceeds were given to Stepping Stones Thrift. “Stepping Stones Agencies is dedicated to ending intimate violence in all forms and promoting individual self- sufficiency, personal growth, self worth and resiliency in the women and children that we are committed to serve.” Stepping Stones Agencies is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides unconditional, non-judgmental, supportive and therapeutic responses. These responses are meant to give them all information necessary to make healthy choices and truly make significant changes in their lives and the lives of their children.
